In life, there are two things you can always count on being in style: good food and great outfits. So in hopes of bridging the gap between the two, we thought it’d be fun to chat with Hillary Dixler Canavan, Eater restaurant editor, about what trends make her feel most confident, the essentials she wears to work (which includes eating at the hottest new restaurants in town), and the Trunk she curated to reflect her own personal style. Keep scrolling to check out Hillary’s exclusive picks and how you can style them wherever you’re headed.

Down to business

“When I work from home, I tend to stick to tees or button-down shirts—comfortable but appropriate pieces in case I have to dial into a video meeting,” says Hillary. And if the workday requires going into the office, Hillary will usually add a third piece overtop like a cardigan or blazer to polish off the look. We love this easy outfit formula because it allows you to style it in a variety of ways. For a simple workwear look, finish off with blue jeans and sleek boots. But if you want to make a statement, dress up the ensemble with fun earrings and and a bold bag.

Confidence boosting comfort

Having a reliable rotation of flattering clothes for your body shape that helps you feel your best is essential. For Hillary, her favorites include tops with a deep V-neckline, cinched waist detailing, and wrap designs. For a fuss-free outfit you can always count on getting the job done, a wrap midi-dress is a universal choice that looks good on just about anyone. The best part is that a dress with subtle movement like this can be styled with sneakers and a denim jacket for an outfit that is as chic as it is laid-back.

Versatile day to night

For busier days where you have dinner plans after work, you’ll need an outfit that can seamlessly transition from your 9-5 to beyond. Hillary’s go-to includes a variation of a nice top, skinny jeans, and slip-on shoes. A pretty blouse and dark denim feels sophisticated but relaxed, and a suede jacket layered on top gives the outfit a luxe touch. If the restaurant you’re going to is more trendy than formal, don’t feel obligated to switch out of your sneakers and simply add a pair of contrasting earrings and a fashion-forward bag to tie the look together.
