This time of year, dressing for cooler weather is the last thing on our minds … until the sun goes down and we start to feel that chill in the air. That's why we love layering—it lets you ease back into longer sleeves and hemlines while still incorporating your summer go-tos. It can be tricky to master the art of layering, but when it's done right you're rewarded with equal parts warmth and style. To remove some of the guesswork, our personal stylists built outfits around three layering pieces that take your summer outfits into fall.

An outfit with a dark-blue cardigan, white joggers, a striped polo, orange sneakers and a blue baseball cap.

The cardigan is a classic, but that doesn't mean it's boring. Blown-up branding gives this one a sporty look, and layering it over a striped polo plays into fall's preppy trend. You could keep that vibe going with crisp chinos; instead, we went in a downtime direction with relaxed joggers and sneakers.

Shirt Jacket

The shirt jacket offers a light, laid-back take on the traditional cold-weather coat, which makes it perfect for that transition from warm to cooler weather. Flannel gives this one an old-favorite look that skews a little casual, so we dressed it up with pleated pants and smart shoes.

Liner Jacket

A lightweight liner jacket offers all the warmth you need for early fall, along with a big dose of utilitarian style. This creamy color is the perfect transitional neutral. It tempers the sunset vibes of the shirt-and-chino combo, and will work just as well with the cooler hues that come with the new season.
