As stylists, we’re often asked who our most beloved designers are and which brands inspire our style choices on a daily basis. We typically don’t like to play favorites, but these designers are just so good, we couldn’t resist placing the spotlight on them. The common thread among them all? They’re all women. And these trailblazers are shaking things up and influencing the world of fashion in a big way. Keep scrolling for a serious dose of girl power.
Double the fun
This eponymous brand is named after its founders, Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard. These two sisters-in-law share the same first and last name, along with their vision to help women feel chic.
Why we love VB
The brand does a fantastic job of striking a balance between cool and classic pieces. Each item is thoughtfully designed as a response to chic everyday dressing.
In their own words
“We find that our customer wants a luxury experience at an advanced contemporary price point, whether she’s a millennial investing in a special occasion dress, a busy executive looking for a modern tailored suit, or a mom-on-the-go looking for a perfect pair of jeans,” Swanson Beard says. “These are the women we’re constantly thinking about.”
A serendipitous moment
Rebecca became an overnight sensation when an “I Love New York” T-shirt she designed appeared on The Tonight Show. Today, the brand offers a wide range of apparel, and is most known for its handbags.
In 2011, this powerhouse designer was awarded with the well-deserved “Breakthrough Designer Award” from the Accessories Council.
Paying it forward
Dedicated to bringing women together, Rebecca established the Female Founder Collective. This network of women-led businesses invests in women’s financial power by enabling and empowering other female-owned businesses.
An industry pioneer
Through a bold and creative approach to fashion, the DVF label has come to symbolize power and independence for a generation of women since its inception in 1972.
Why we can’t get enough
DVF is renowned for its iconic wrap dresses, stand-out signature prints, and flattering feminine silhouettes. And we’re not the brand’s only fans—just two years after creating the wrap dress in 1974, more than 5 million dresses had already been sold.
A champion for femininity
“I design for the woman who loves being a woman,” Diane Von Furstenberg has famously said. This very motto is what helped her get named as one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People.
Alice + Olivia
Brains of the operation
In 2002, Stacey Bendet founded the brand as a way to help women express their personal style. And what started as a personal quest to create the perfect pair of pants has since evolved into a lifestyle collection that includes everything from gowns to eyewear.
A unique aesthetic
When it comes to a fresh and out-of-the-box approach to fashion, this is our go-to label. The brand does a fantastic job of creating pieces that are whimsical and flirty, while still feeling sexy and sophisticated.
As seen in Hollywood
Because of its truly unique approach to fashion, Alice + Olivia is a favorite among the stars. Celebrity fans include Gwyneth Paltrow, Gigi Hadid, Amal Clooney, Jessica Alba, and Kourtney Kardashian.
“I love denim! I wear it everyday and it's truly the foundation of everyone’s wardrobe,” says Paige Adams-Geller, brand founder. “I also felt there was a void in the marketplace at that time. The market was saturated by all male designers and owners. I saw my opportunity to showcase denim from a fresh female perspective.”
Why we love the label
Aside from being a reliable source for on-trend style, its philanthropic efforts and unique brand philosophy keep us coming back for more. Plus, Paige is the only female founder in the denim industry today. Girl power, anyone?
Career advice from Paige
“Problems come along every day, so it's best not to dwell on them. If one door closes, another one usually opens. You can’t be afraid to ask for help, because you can't do this alone.”
Destined for fashion
After growing tired of not being able to find clothes she liked, a young Isabel Marant began making her own clothes out of old garments and fabrics. It wasn’t long before her friends started asking her to create pieces for them as well.
Coveted by celebs
Isabel Marant’s pieces are characterized by an impossibly chic, casual-cool vibe. You may have seen their designs on celebrities like Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Kate Bosworth, Rachel Weisz, and Alexa Chung.
Since being launched in 1989, the company has 10 shops in major cities including Paris, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, Los Angeles, Beijing, Madrid, Beirut, and London. Additionally, you can find their designs in retailers located in more than 35 countries.
Arielle Charnas made the transition from fashion blogger to mega influencer, with the launch of her fashion line in collaboration with Nordstrom. With reported earnings of $1 million in just a single day, Arielle shows us that no dream is ever too big.
Boasting a design aesthetic best summed up as “elevated basics,” we’re obsessed with these pieces because they give our everyday essentials a modern spin with fresh prints and vibrant colors.
The finishing touch
More than just great clothes, Something Navy also offers a great range of jewelry. We’re especially drawn to the minimal designs that are bold in style because each piece really amplifies an outfit without being too distracting.
Business partners for almost 20 years, Emily Current and Meritt Elliott have had an incredible journey as entrepreneurs, brand builders, stylists, and designers.
All in the name
Also known as the designers’ most proud achievement to date, The Great. is a collection of classic California cool pieces that were inspired by their experience as stylists. We love the cool-girl edge that each piece boasts.
Leading by example
There’s nothing we admire more than women uplifting other women. And these ladies are known for supporting female friendships and creative fearlessness with a kind and optimistic approach to both life and design.
Since launching in 2004, the Tory Burch collection offers a full range of clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories, watches, home, and beauty. There’s something for everyone!
In good company
In addition to being an entrepreneur, fashion designer, and chief creative officer of her own brand, Tory Burch was listed as the 73rd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes in 2015.
After finding success with her own company, the designer launched the Tory Burch Foundation to give back and support women entrepreneurs.
As a British luxury jewelry brand, Monica Vinader makes it a point to celebrate individuality. The namesake label is best known for its iconic friendship bracelets, vibrant gemstones, and diamond pieces.
The unique designs have caught the eyes and hearts of Emma Watson, Olivia Palermo, and even the Duchess of Cambridge.
In its debut year, Monica Vinader won Brand of the Year at the UK Jewelry Awards.
We can’t wait to see what collections these innovative designers come out with next. One thing’s for sure: These women will continue to be a huge inspiration for us (and our closets).
