Diamonds are fine and all, but we like to think of denim as a woman’s best friend. The right pair can lift your spirits, your look, and, hopefully, your derrière. With that in mind, we’ve put together a denim guide that can help women find the fit(s) that feel tailor-made for them—with absolutely no references to fruit shapes.

This is all about keeping your curves in proportion. If you’re wearing a flared jean, go with a form-fitting shirt. If you opt for a slim or straight pant, feel free to play with peplums and other voluminous details on top. Either way, look for a high-rise to accentuate your waist.

There are a lot of silhouettes that work for ladies with tummies. With any of the below styles, a high rise will elongate your torso by creating a waistline, and full-length inseams will make your legs look longer.

The best way to balance this shape is with a rise that hits at or above your waistline—it’ll draw the eye up. Super-slim denim has the potential to only exaggerate a triangular shape. Instead, try silhouettes that create some breathing room on bottom.

Narrow a broader top half with mid- to high-rise denim. It’ll draw the eye down, and create proportion by elongating your legs. Beyond that, feel free to play with most any silhouette from skinnys to flares. Anything with a really wide leg will tip your silhouette back into disproportion, though.

As far as denim silhouettes go, there aren’t a ton of things to keep in mind here. But there are a few tricks for creating curves, if you want: accentuate your waist with a high rise, a belt, or by tucking your shirt.
