Like all the items on our essentials list, we love the v-neck sweater for its versatility. The distinctive shape of the neckline does an excellent job of framing your shirt collar and face, making the garment ideal for layering over button-ups.
For a more sophisticated presentation, the v-neck can be worn simultaneously over a dress shirt and under a blazer. It also looks great on its own, as a casual piece. In fact, our V.P. of Product, Jason Smith, typically wears an unlayered v-neck with jeans as his weekend uniform.
Helpful hint: Steer clear of wearing crew neck t-shirts under v-neck sweaters. Crew necks shorten the proportions of your torso, whereas v-necks make you look taller and slimmer.
The v-neck’s versatility isn’t limited to layering. It also extends to climate. The sweater serves just as well during summer nights in southern California as in the dead of Midwestern winter. And in terms of color, there’s no end of variety. We’re partial to gray, and recommended it for your first v-neck. (We also recommend gray for your second proper suit. The first one should be navy.) If you’ve already got the first sweater in play, any of the colors below would make fine additions.
Like that stack of sweaters? We’d be happy to send you the entire bundle in a dedicated v-neck trunk. Or if you need a more general wardrobe re-boot, we can put together a trunk featuring all six essentials. Click here to get started.
