Guys Should Know: How to Order Wine

Now that we’ve finished our series on the Six Men’s Clothing Essentials, we thought we’d share a few of the non-clothing-related skills that we consider essential for guys to know. First up: how to order wine.

How to Order Wine Trunk Club

We recently visited with Shawn Patrick Harris, who works as wine steward at Nellcôte, the much talked-about restaurant on bustling West Randolph Street in Chicago.

Inside Trunk Club HQ: The Billy Reid Space

At Trunk Club HQ, we have 15 dressing areas, five of which were designed by our vendors. (We previously talked about our Jack Spade space, here.) For a tour of our Billy Reid dressing parlor, we now turn to Justin Couchara.

Justin, who works as a scenic designer for Billy Reid, is the man behind the southern comfort on our seventh floor.

First things first: What’s the story with the portrait of the gentleman and the baby?

Trunk Club: Top Moments from 2012

During 2012 Trunk Club had plenty of memorable moments. Here are a few of the year’s high points, in no particular order.

Our Big Move

Trunk Club Office

This summer we moved into our new River North headquarters. The legendary roof deck is currently unavailable (what with it being winter in Chicago), but there’s still plenty to love about our new home. The next time you’re in River North, stop by and say hello.

Work Hard, Play Hard

What has roughly 240 thumbs and likes to party? Trunk Club, naturally. During 2012 our team (which currently includes around 120 style, tech, inventory, and other experts) proved that we can throw a shindig with the best of them.

Some of the year’s nightlife highlights:

We’re opening up Trunk Club HQ tomorrow night to Trunk Club members and their mo-growing friends for our end-of-Movember celebration, known as ‘Stache Bash.. If you’re participating in Movember, it’s rsvp@trunkclub.com

The first-ever Trunk Club Holiday Shopping Event is almost here. We’re hosting some of our favorite Chicago businesses, from chocolate makers to jewelry designers. Stop by, enjoy a few drinks, and check off everyone on your holiday list.

To get in the holiday spirit, watch our holiday video by clicking here. Remember, folks: bad cardigans ruin lives.

Last Friday we threw a party for VIP guests at the Techweek conference in Chicago. Here are a few scenes from our loft, starring Trunk Club stylists.

Member Profile: Brad

Every morning Brad commutes from the suburbs to downtown Chicago, where he works at a plucky little startup called Facebook. Add in business traveling and evenings dedicated to family, and he has no time to shop for clothes, even though he wants to look good. Lucky for Brad, in addition to our well-known trunk service, Trunk Club also offers in-house appointments at our Chicago headquarters.

Having built a relationship with Brad over the last couple of years, his personal stylist, Lisa Bubes, can anticipate which clothes he will like, allowing her to prepare selections ahead of appointments.

Lisa walks Brad through her picks, with the couch serving as their keep pile.

Moments later, the time-pressed executive emerges from Trunk Club on schedule and, in terms of style, well ahead of the game.

“Brad is a casual guy and his workplace is casual, too,” Lisa says. “My whole goal is getting him stuff that he can wear to work but also out to dinner and on the weekends with his family. Here’s why I chose the clothes for this outfit:

  • The five-pocket chinos are soft and a good alternative to jeans.
  • The four-season blazer can be worn year-round. It also has cool details like elbow patches that I knew Brad would like because he needs classic pieces but is always up for trying something different. Plus, the navy color ties in with the outfit.
  • Since this outfit includes sneakers, I definitely wanted to avoid a leather belt. The web belt looks great with casual shoes—and of course it’s coordinated with the clothes.
  • The sneakers add a cool punch to what would otherwise be a dressy look.

“When Brad first started with Trunk Club he was a little bit more restricted on what to try. Now we’ve built a level of trust, and he has a foundation of basics in his closet, so we can try working in more fun pieces.”

Trunk Club members are always welcome for in-house appointments at our River North loft: 311 West Superior, Suite 504. Your stylist will by happy to set up a time at your convenience. Members outside Chicago, while continuing to enjoy our trunk service, should by all means visit whenever they’re in the Windy City.

Lisa Bubes is a Trunk Club Senior Stylist and can be reached via Twitter: @LBTheStylist.

Winter, we know you were no good for us. You were cold, harsh and really slushy. But every so often we open the hall closet and catch a glimpse of the cozy jacket or knit hat that kept us toasty, and we secretly can’t wait until the next time you come back around.
